"Between 40 and 50% of all new teachers leave teaching within their first five years — no doubt even more in low-income schools. Recruiting more teachers alone will not solve the teacher crisis if large numbers then depart in a few short years. The image that comes to mind is a bucket rapidly losing water because of holes in the bottom. Pouring more water into the bucket will not be the answer if the holes are not first patched. RISE is one of the most promising new approaches to plugging those holes in the bucket. It is an admirable effort to improving teacher retention and, ultimately closing the achievement gap in our disadvantaged K-12 public schools."

"We are what we celebrate. America today celebrates its athletes, our astronauts, even our movie and rock stars. But we do not celebrate some of our most important heroes—our teachers. RISE is asking us to reevaluate how teachers in low-income public schools are recognized and rewarded — and just in time with current attrition rates frighteningly high among effective teachers in these communities. RISE's innovation is to reward and retain teachers based on student success, not tenure. Great teachers are leaving the jobs where they are needed most because we don't honor their commitment and success with the students that need them most. RISE is changing the status quo for the less fortunate students in the public education system in our country. The model is sustainable, and poised to scale nationally. The RISE solution is real, and is already having impact in San Francisco, Chicago and LA."

"If it weren't for RISE's introduction to Downtown College Prep of San Jose, California, I'd still be teaching thirty students at a time, buying all my own materials, scrubbing my classroom before schools starts, sending students to ineffectual administrators, wasting my time at staff development meetings of over 100 staff members, and feeling like I was failing my students."

- Jesse Robinson, RISE Teacher

"[My] co-RISE Teachers are all strong and effective educators who are highly committed to their students' learning and personal growth. It is inspiring to sit with young, energetic teachers who share your passion for education reform and high-quality teaching."

- Sarah Braunstein, RISE Teacher

"My teacher induction program gave me an opportunity to teach - but in a dysfunctional school setting. RISE support has allowed me to teach the same demographics, but in a functional setting."

"We have a fantastic program in inner-city Los Angeles — a 16:1 student/teacher ratio, a social justice theme, plenty of prep time and collaborative leadership, union scale pay...but if we can't find a way to let prospective teachers know about the program, we're in trouble. RISE is the best way to find qualified teachers, and the better RISE knows us, the easier it is going to be to recruit qualified candidates. We are extremely grateful for the relationship."
